Salisbury, MD – The University System of Maryland (USM) recently awarded SU junior Megan Spicer with one of 12 inaugural Board of Regents Student Excellence Scholarships.
Spicer, a chemistry major, of Hampstead, MD, was recognized in the “Leadership and Advocacy” category for her dedication to the SU campus community and representation of her peers through roles with student organizations.
“Earning this scholarship, especially among the first cohort to be awarded, is such an exciting honor,” she said. “I’m grateful for the support SU has shown me every step of the way, including Dr. Habay for the recommendation.”
“Megan displays a strong desire to both learn and share chemistry with others and she is invested in the success of her classmates,” said Dr. Stephen Habay, chair of SU’s Chemistry Department. “Her curiosity, perseverance and drive to mentor others demonstrate a degree of leadership that I’ve rarely encountered in my students over the last 15 years of teaching in higher education.”
Spicer’s leadership roles on campus include serving as the SU Student Government Association’s 2022-23 director of marketing and communications, a member of the Student Leadership Advisory Council in the Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology, a lead ambassador in the Glenda Chatham and Robert G. Clarke Honors College, an orientation leader, and a chemistry supplemental instructor and tutor in SU’s Chemistry Support Center.
“I hope the USM scholarships can inspire others to apply for new opportunities because you never know where your skills may stand out,” Spicer said. “When you start getting involved in your campus community I don’t think the initial goal is to become a leader or mentor. I think through wanting connection with your peers and doing things you enjoy, you end up advocating for your fellow students in groups you are and aren’t apart of. The experiences and new relationships allow you to be a voice for important topics and help others along the way.”
Scholarship recipients were recognized at a May 21 ceremony. In addition to the scholarship, students earn special regalia for their respective commencement ceremonies.
