“Hyphenative” September 7-November 10 at SU Art Galleries Downtown

Artists explore hyphenated and hybrid cultures created by migrations throughout history during the exhibit “Hyphenative” September 7-November 10 at SU Art Galleries Downtown.
An exhibition reception is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, 5-7pm. Haitian American artist Édouard Duval-Carrié will be in attendance. Duval-Carrié also gives an artist lecture at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 13, in Perdue Hall Room 156.
Artists featured in the exhibit use mythic histories, reimagined folk traditions and cultural appropriation to embody contemporary traditions in the diasporic world.
Born in Haiti, visiting artist Duval-Carrié immigrated to Puerto Rico during the Duvalier Regime before attending the Université de Montréal and McGill University in Canada and ultimately graduating from Loyola College in Montreal.
He later attended the École Nationale Superiéure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, residing in France for many years before moving to Miami, where he lives today. His work is influenced by Hatian culture and history, capturing the idea of the “nation,” often through political and religious themes.

Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, noon-4 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Co-sponsored by SU Art Galleries and the Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies Department admission to the exhibition, reception and talk are free and the public is invited.
