Only Delmarva Hospital Honored with Five Stars for Third Consecutive Year
Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) is one of just eight hospitals in Maryland and the only on the Delmarva Peninsula to be awarded a Five-Star rating, the highest possible, by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Only 8.9 percent – 407 of the more than 4,500 hospitals in the survey, including PRMC –achieved a five-star rating. This is the third consecutive year that PRMC has achieved the Five-Star designation from CMS.

The Hospital Compare overall hospital rating summarizes a variety of measures across seven areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. Once reporting thresholds are met, a hospital’s overall hospital rating is calculated using only those measures for which data are available. This may include as few as 9 or as many as 51 measures. The average is about 37 measures.
Hospitals report data to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services through the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program and the Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR) Program.
The star rating uses seven different statistical models to calculate quality measures. Those models include mortality rates, safety of care, readmission (how often a patient is readmitted after discharge), patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging. PRMC scored above the national average in safety of care, readmission and use of medical imaging. Additionally, the number of patients who rated their PRMC healthcare experience at a 9 or 10 was above the Maryland average for other hospitals.
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Delaware, a member hospital of the Peninsula Regional Health System, was among the 24 percent of hospitals or 1,136 in the survey to achieve a 4-Star Rating from CMS. The percentage of patients there who rated their experience at a 9 or 10 was above both the Delaware and the national average.
Overall rating ranges from one to five stars with the majority of American hospitals achieving a three-star rating.
