Salisbury, MD — The City of Salisbury is proud to announce the completion of Salisbury’s newest public art installation, a mural located at Waterside Park on Fitzwater Street. The mural is the fourth in two years for the City, joining previously completed murals at VFW 10159, the intersection of Church Street and Business Route 13, and Evolution Craft Brewery.
The mural, titled “Sky’s the Limit,” was painted by artist Shelton Hawkins and depicts the sun, clouds, and waves in an abstract style. Hawkins’ studio, Play in Color, reimagines basketball courts by painting vibrant murals on the surface of the court, bringing art and creativity to neighborhood playgrounds and parks.
“It’s a great feeling to finally see this idea become a reality after two years of collaboration with Mayor Day and the designer, Alyssa Barnes,” said Hawkins. “I’m excited for Salisbury and this community to have an art basketball court. Creating a cool space like this will get kids in the community to come out and get them excited about playing.”
Hawkins has previously completed two basketball court murals in his hometown of Easton, MD. His mission is to create vibrant community spaces and unite kids around art—a key value in Salisbury’s urban design and public art efforts.
“We are always working to create safe spaces for our communities to gather and play, but often, art is missing from these spaces,” said Mayor Jacob Day. “This mural and its unique placement–right under the feet of our youth–will continually uplift and energize them every time they step foot on the court.”
A ribbon cutting for “Sky’s the Limit” will be held on Tuesday, October 25 from 5-6 pm. The event will include remarks from Mayor Jacob Day and artist Shelton Hawkins. Following remarks, enjoy free basketball drills, snacks, and drinks from our City of Salisbury Community Relations team.
