The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore (CFES) honored Maryland Lower Shore schools and educators with $55,631 in grants through the Foundation’s 2014 Education Award Grants Program.
Education Awards are made annually in conjunction with National Education Week through a competitive process to public and private schools on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Grants are made to those schools that have developed innovative programs to be particularly beneficial to their students and communities.
“This awards program is the Community Foundation’s principle vehicle for recognizing and rewarding those schools that are engaged in making a particularly creative contribution to the education of our children,” said Dr. Doug Wilson, CFES President & CEO. “These awards highlight truly remarkable things our dedicated teachers and school administrators are accomplishing,” he added.
Calcott Award of Excellence Celebrates a Decade of Accomplishment
The Community Foundation honored a school from each of the three counties with the Tenth Annual Mary Gay Calcott Award of Excellence. The three schools recognized for their program creativity and curriculum ingenuity are: Wicomico County’s Parkside High School CTE, Somerset County Public Schools and Ocean City Elementary in Worcester County. In addition to the Calcott Award, each school received $1,000 from the Foundation’s Mary Gay Calcott Memorial Fund.
The award is named for the late Mary Gay Calcott, a professor of English at Salisbury University whose life embodied her teaching ideals of a liberal education; teaching students to think, to express themselves with clarity and to care about the world they live in.
The following programs received Education Award Grants for 2014 during ceremonies held at the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore’s Nonprofit Support Center in Salisbury:
In Somerset County:
* Carter G. Woodson Elementary School – after school garden and club for kindergarten, 4th and 5th graders
* Crisfield High School – in partnership with the Crisfield Heritage Foundation, creation of a rain garden to learn about native plants and animals
* Holly Grove Christian School – technologies and equipment in K-5 Computer, 2nd grade and Calculus classes
* Princess Anne Elementary School – purchase music supplies and an Artist in Residence steel drum musician
* Princess Anne Elementary School – purchase sensory equipment for use in Early Childhood curriculum classes
* Somerset County Public Schools – in partnership with the Friends of Teackle Mansion, provide materials and field trip experiences during a 5th and 6th grade summer camp
In Wicomico County:
* East Salisbury Elementary School – provide for a math curriculum theme Artist in Residence Program
* Fruitland Primary School – support two Artist in Residence experiences that tie literacy and art together
* Fruitland Primary School – provide a positive literacy themed parent and child experience
* Fruitland Primary School – purchase iPad minis for second grade reading programs
* North Salisbury Elementary School – provide one week of Mobile Science Lab activities for 100 children
* Parkside High School – in partnership with UMES, support a pilot horticulture program entitled “Jr. MANRRS
* Prince Street Elementary School – support a Father/Daughter formal dance with the goal of encouraging more male parent participation in school
* Salisbury Middle School – purchase the materials needed to create a TAD Program entomological garden
* Salisbury School, Inc. – purchase technology and equipment for a pilot writing lab
* Wicomico County Board of Education – broaden the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program
* Wicomico Day School – purchase materials to enhance science curriculums
* Wicomico High School – in partnership with Salisbury’s Promise, provide support for the afterschool “Tribe” Program
* Willards Elementary School – create an afterschool program entitled “Brains and Movement” for chess and dance
In Worcester County:
* Cedar Chapel Special School – purchase a SMART multi-touch board and iRover for math curriculum
* Ocean City Elementary School – purchase three SMARTECH Light Raise Interactive Touch Projectors to integrate student devices and other classroom technologies
* Snow Hill Elementary School – purchase equipment for an outdoor classroom installation to enhance science curriculum
* Stephen Decatur High School – purchase a Mimio Vote Assessment and Camera for us with Biology curriculum
* Worcester Preparatory School, Inc. – purchase technologies and equipment for a pilot videoconference field trip program
