Salisbury, MD – Poplar Hill Mansion, which dates back to the late 18th century, now has a piece of more recent history on display – a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol.
The Samuel Chase Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution donated the flag in the fall. The chapter chooses one organization per year to receive a flag, and in 2023, it went to Poplar Hill Mansion. The group requested the flag – which is large, at five feet tall by eight feet wide — from U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin.
The flag, with accompanying certificates, is displayed in the dining room, and the replica War of 1812 flag that previously adorned that room has moved upstairs.
“It’s a great honor to receive this flag and have it displayed at Poplar Hill Mansion,” said Curator Sarah Meyers. “Thank you to the DAR for thinking of us for this important piece of history.”
After a holiday break, Poplar Hill Mansion will reopen for visitors Sunday, Jan. 14. Poplar Hill Mansion is generally open for free, open-house style tours on Fridays and Sundays from noon-4 p.m. Tours may also be scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday by appointment.
