Baltimore, MD – The Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) is pleased to announce the appointment of a distinguished member of the team. Maria Mathias has been appointed as the new Associate Director. Maria has been a cornerstone of the Department, and brings over 35 years of expertise, dedicated service, and leadership to this critical role.
“We are thrilled to have Maria step into the role of Associate Director,” said Dan Phillips, Director of SDAT. “Her extensive experience, commitment to excellence, and proven leadership will undoubtedly strengthen our department and enhance our services to the citizens of Maryland.”
In this role, Maria will be working closely with Director Phillips overseeing the daily operations of the Department’s divisions as well as developing and implementing strategic plans to improve the efficiency and overall effectiveness of the Department..
Maria began her career with SDAT in 1988 as an Assessor in the Business Personal Property (BPP) division. Over the years, she ascended through the ranks to become the Administrator of the BPP, Utility Valuation, and Franchise Tax units. These units collectively manage an assessable base exceeding $26 billion and collaborate closely with other Business Services units in Charter/Legal to ensure accuracy and compliance. Throughout her tenure, Maria has been instrumental in representing the Department annually alongside the Comptroller and Secretary of State. Her contributions extend to delivering updates on statutes and assessment processes at conferences hosted by the MD State Tax Study Group, the Maryland Association of CPAs, and the Maryland Society of Accounting and Tax Professionals.
Recognized as a Personal Property Specialist by the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), Maria has been a driving force in promoting professional development among BPP assessors. Under their guidance, over 40 percent of the BPP assessing teams have achieved the same qualification, significantly enhancing the department’s expertise.
