Salisbury, MD — In late September, Salisbury Zoological Park’s leadership participated in the 2024 Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Conference, held in Calgary, Canada. Representing the zoo were Chuck Eicholz, Director of the Salisbury Zoo, and Hannah Buchek, Animal Care Technician III. The zoo not only attended the conference but was honored with the opportunity to present alongside the design firm Espten Group, sharing the innovative plans for the new Andean Bear Exhibit.
The zoo extends special thanks to the Purdue Foundation, whose support was instrumental in funding the exhibit’s design. Presenting to an international audience provided a platform for the Salisbury Zoo to tell the story of this exciting project and highlight the future of wildlife conservation efforts at the zoo.
Salisbury Zoo’s involvement at the conference extended beyond the presentation. The team participated in key meetings, including those for the Andean Bear SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program and the Bear Taxon Advisory Group (TAG). These collaborative efforts reinforce the zoo’s commitment to protecting Andean bears and contribute to global conservation strategies.
Additionally, Salisbury Zoo staff attended all AZA Pathways Program seminars, underscoring the zoo’s dedication to AZA accreditation, which is targeted for the near future. Engaging in these seminars reflects the zoo’s proactive approach to meeting the highest industry standards for animal care, education, and conservation.
“We gained valuable insights from the conference, and many of the ideas we explored will be incorporated into our upcoming Five-Year Strategic Plan,” said Chuck Eicholz. “Our participation underscores the zoo’s commitment to continuous improvement and leadership in the field of conservation.”
