The healing touch and compassion of Dr. José F. Alvarado, who died in 2009, continues to touch the lives of thousands of local children with the family’s recent $7,000 contribution to the local United Way’s Imagination Library program. The Imagination Library Program was originally started by Dolly Parton years ago to provide free quality books mailed to preschool children every month from their birth to their 5th birthday with the goal of increasing kindergarten readiness. The results nationwide show the program works and the local United Way began the program in 2012 as one of over 800 United Way providers and in just two years has delivered over 39,000 books to over 1,800 children on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore.
According to United Way Executive Director, Kathleen Mommé, “Thanks to the generous support of the Alvarado Family, over 3,200 more books will be able to be delivered and most importantly there will be a significant number of children who will be running to their mail boxes in the year ahead as they receive their very own brand new book every month.” Families who would like to enroll their children in this program may do so by contacting the United Way or picking up an Imagination Library brochure at the Alvarado pediatric office which has continued the tradition of compassionate care for local children with Dr. José E. Alvarado, the son of the late Dr. José F. Alvarado.
