Salisbury, MD — The Governors Challenge, the best experience in high school hoops, is celebrating Christmas in July with the announcement of a new college-level tournament.
Nine Division III men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete in the first-ever Governors Challenge Collegiate, Nov. 21-23 at the Wicomico Civic Center.
“We’re thrilled to take the Governors Challenge to the collegiate level—an expansion that has long been in the works,” said tournament director James Simmons. “Partnering with a Division III powerhouse like Salisbury University gives us a strong foundation to grow.”
“This partnership brings together two highly respected sports brands in a shared mission to elevate the student-athlete experience, drive community engagement, and expand the footprint of competitive basketball on the Eastern Shore,” said Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation for Salisbury University Monica Gordy Polizzi. “We look forward to building a tradition that reflects the excellence and spirit of both organizations.”
The men’s teams participating include Salisbury University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Wesleyan University, Roanoke College and Gettysburg College. Three of these five teams finished the 2024-25 season ranked in the top 25 by D3hoops.com.
“I am grateful to be able to partner on this event,” said Salisbury University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mo Williams. “We look forward to competing with some of the best teams in the country at the NCAA Division III level.”
The women’s teams in attendance include Salisbury University, Lehman College, Kean University and Immaculata College.
“We are very excited about collaborating with Wicomico County Tourism on Governors Challenge Collegiate,” said Salisbury University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Aprile Preller-Guy. “Their staff puts on great events and we are thrilled to be a part of this new top-tier experience.
