Salisbury, MD — The Society of St. Andrew (SoSA), a national nonprofit dedicated to reducing food waste and feeding hungry neighbors, recently gathered volunteers at their Delmarva office for a Seed Packing Event—an initiative that transforms small acts of service into thousands of pounds of healthy, homegrown food for communities across the region.

Rooted in its mission to bring people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste, and build caring communities, SoSA’s seed-packing events offer a hands-on way for volunteers to support food security long before harvest season begins. The seeds packed during these events are distributed to community gardens, farmers, and schools, where they are grown into fresh produce donated directly to families in need.

Last week’s event was a standout success. Volunteers packed 3,020 seed packets, averaging 215 packets per person—a remarkable achievement that reflects how much good we can do when we come together. Each packet contains enough seed to grow approximately 40 pounds of nutritious lettuce, meaning this single event will help produce an estimated 120,000 pounds of fresh food for donation.

“These winter gatherings are more than volunteer events—they are a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together with purpose,” said Alena Wright, Delmarva Program Coordinator. “Every seed packed represents nourishment, dignity, and hope for a neighbor who needs it.”

The Society of St. Andrew will continue hosting seed-packing opportunities throughout the winter months, inviting individuals, families, and groups to take part in this meaningful effort. By participating, volunteers help ensure that community growers have the resources they need to cultivate fresh, healthy food for local food banks, pantries, and feeding programs.
