Delmarva, MD — The Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) Delmarva announced the successful distribution of 11,000 pounds of locally grown potatoes this week, providing more than 44,000 servings of nutritious food to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity across the region.
This effort was made possible through the generosity of local farmer Jake Lovett. Because of changes to the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA), a program which pays farmers to raise fresh produce for donation, Mr. Lovett was left with potatoes that he was not going to be compensated for. SoSA is grateful for his generosity in donating the good, fresh food through the Delmarva Gleaning Network. Mr. Lovett values giving back and feeding our community. Working in partnership With the Harvest Outreach People Project, SoSA coordinated the collection and distribution of the produce to ensure it reached communities where the need is greatest.
“Farmer Lovette’s donation reflects the power of local partnerships in addressing hunger right here at home,” said Alena Wright, Program Coordinator at Society of St. Andrew Delmarva. “By connecting farmers, volunteers, and community agencies, we’re able to rescue good, healthy food and deliver it directly to our neighbors who need it most.”
The collaboration with Harvest Outreach People Project, a Wilmington, DE based nonprofit, enabled efficient distribution across multiple service areas, ensuring that thousands of families received fresh, high‑quality potatoes at a time when many are facing rising food costs and limited access to nutritious options.
The Society of St. Andrew Delmarva continues to work with farmers, volunteers, and hunger‑relief partners to glean and distribute surplus produce throughout the region. Donations like this one play a vital role in strengthening local food systems and supporting community well‑being.
