Two sessions of Stop the Bleed Train the Trainer training were held at the Northgate headquarters of Wicomico County Public Schools for high school Health Education teachers. The training was presented by the University of Maryland Medical Center, coordinators Sarah Trice, Carla Copper, and Supervisor Thasia Palmieri.
This is a national initiative led by the American College of Surgeons, Department of Defense, and trauma centers to teach techniques to stop bleeding in the event of a life-threatening injury. The training covers the principles of pressure, packing, and tourniquet use to help save lives in sever bleeding injuries.
Nineteen Health Education teachers from Wicomico Schools and Christine Tobias, Supervisor of Physical Education and Health, were trained to be trainers. They are now prepared to teach lifesaving bleeding control techniques to students taking Health Education. Students will have the opportunity to become certified in Stop the Bleed.
Pictured in photos of Wednesday afternoon’s training are Health Education teachers from Wicomico High, Mardela Middle & High, Parkside High, and James M. Bennett High. Choices Academy teachers attended the morning session. Health teachers from Snow Hill and Pocomoke high schools (Worcester County Public Schools) also joined Wicomico Schools for this training.
