Every October, organizations across the nation observe Cybersecurity Awareness Month. BDK, Inc. is encouraging businesses throughout the Salisbury area to take proactive steps to protect their operations, employees, and customers from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
Led by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Cybersecurity Awareness Month highlights the importance of strengthening digital security through practical, everyday actions. This year’s campaign emphasizes that cyber threats continue to evolve rapidly, making cybersecurity a shared responsibility for organizations of every size. CISA encourages both individuals and businesses to focus on foundational security measures such as using multifactor authentication, password managers, and other proven cybersecurity practices.
For many organizations, phishing remains one of the most significant cybersecurity threats. As BDK’s cybersecurity team has observed, phishing attacks continue to be one of the most common and effective methods cybercriminals use to gain access to sensitive information, credentials, and business systems. Attackers frequently disguise themselves as trusted brands, coworkers, vendors, or software providers in an effort to trick users into sharing passwords, multifactor authentication codes, or financial information.
“Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an excellent opportunity for businesses to evaluate their security posture and educate employees about current threats,” said Allison Shellhamer, VP of Sales and Marketing at BDK. “Many successful cyberattacks begin with a single email, a weak password, or an unpatched system. The good news is that organizations can significantly reduce their risk by focusing on cybersecurity fundamentals and employee awareness.”
BDK recommends that businesses strengthen their cybersecurity posture by implementing strong password policies, enabling multi-factor authentication, maintaining current software updates, deploying advanced threat detection tools, and ensuring critical business data is backed up securely. Equally important is employee education. Because phishing attacks rely heavily on human interaction, regular cybersecurity awareness training can help employees identify suspicious messages before they result in a security incident.
One simple approach BDK encourages employees to adopt is the SLAM method (sender, links, attachments, messages) when evaluating emails. Users should verify the sender’s identity, inspect “links” before clicking, confirm whether attachments were expected, and consider whether the message appears unusual or creates a sense of urgency. Taking a few extra moments to evaluate an email can often prevent a significant security event.
“Cybersecurity isn’t a ‘set it and forget it’ initiative,” Shellhamer added. “Threats are constantly evolving, which means organizations must regularly review their defenses, keep systems current, and ensure employees remain vigilant. Technology is a critical layer of protection, but education and awareness remain some of the most effective security tools available.”
Cybersecurity incidents can result in financial losses, reputational damage, operational disruptions, legal consequences, and the loss of sensitive data. A proactive cybersecurity strategy helps organizations reduce those risks while maintaining business continuity and protecting customer trust. Investing in preventative security measures is far less costly than responding to a breach after it occurs
Throughout Cybersecurity Awareness Month, BDK encourages businesses across Salisbury and Maryland’s Eastern Shore to assess their cybersecurity readiness and take steps to strengthen their defenses against today’s evolving threat landscape.
