Delmarva Peninsula – While nearly 40 million Americans face food insecurity, an estimated 30-40% of U.S.-grown produce goes unharvested or unsold due to cosmetic imperfections or low market value. The Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) Delmarva is addressing both challenges through its Team Glean volunteer program.
Team Glean volunteers rescue fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste and help deliver them to local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and feeding programs across the region.
“So much good food never leaves the field,” said the Society of St. Andrew Delmarva team. “Through gleaning, volunteers can make a direct impact by harvesting healthy produce and helping ensure it reaches neighbors who need it most.”
Organizations, businesses, employee groups, families, and community volunteers can participate in hands-on food rescue events lasting just 2 to 4 hours. SoSA staff coordinate logistics, provide food and farm safety training, and guide volunteers throughout the experience.
By joining Team Glean, participants work together outdoors, support local farmers, reduce food waste, and help provide fresh produce to individuals and families facing hunger.
