Innovative project will convert landfill methane into renewable energy while strengthening environmental sustainability and energy reliability.

Wicomico County, MD — County Executive Julie Giordano is pleased to announce continued progress on a groundbreaking Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project at the Newland Park Landfill in Salisbury, Maryland. This initiative represents another major step toward modernizing county infrastructure, expanding alternative energy production, and positioning Wicomico County as a leader in environmental stewardship.

Following nearly a year of due diligence, Wicomico County finalized agreements with WAGA Energy to develop what is anticipated to be Maryland’s first cryogenic distillation facility designed to convert landfill gases, including methane, into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and landfills are a significant source of emissions. By capturing and converting these gases into usable energy, Wicomico County is taking an innovative approach to environmental protection while maximizing the value of existing county resources.

“This project is another example of what can happen when we focus on innovation, responsible government, and long-term solutions,” said County Executive Julie Giordano. “We are turning what was once considered a waste product into a valuable energy resource while strengthening our infrastructure and protecting our environment. I am incredibly proud of our Department of Public Works and the partnerships making this possible.”

To further support the initiative, the County has engaged the Maryland Energy Administration through its Local Government Energy Modernization (L-GEM) Grant Program to assist with infrastructure planning and development.

Since November 2025, WAGA Energy, the County’s existing landfill-gas-to-energy partner Archaea, and local utility providers have worked collaboratively to finalize easements, agreements, and natural gas interconnection plans. Engineering and facility development are currently underway, with renewable natural gas production anticipated to begin in the spring or summer of 2028.

In the meantime, Archaea will continue converting collected landfill methane into electricity, ensuring uninterrupted gas recovery operations and continued air emissions compliance. Once WAGA Energy begins operations, Archaea is expected to remain at Newland Park as an electrical peaking facility, helping support regional electricity reliability during periods of high demand.

“This is exactly the kind of forward-thinking investment that benefits our residents today while preparing our county for tomorrow,” Giordano added. “Through strong leadership, strategic partnerships, and responsible planning, we are finding innovative ways to improve government operations and create long-term value for our community.”

The County Executive commended the Department of Public Works, WAGA Energy, Archaea, the Maryland Energy Administration, and participating utility providers for their dedication to advancing this project.

The Newland Park Renewable Natural Gas project reflects the Giordano Administration’s continued commitment to infrastructure modernization, environmental responsibility, operational efficiency, and innovative energy solutions that will benefit Wicomico County for years to come.
