The Arthur W. Perdue Foundation recently awarded $20,000 to Salisbury Horizons to support the program’s expansion goals. In 2016, Salisbury Horizons will be launching its second site on the campus of Salisbury University. The initial expansion will see the addition of about 24 new students to the program.
“The Horizons Program has proven itself as a successful enhancement to the life of many children in need in the Salisbury area,” said Kim Nechay, executive director of The Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. “We are honored to provide funding to help this program expand so that the benefits it provides will continue to multiply for years to come.”
The program promotes positive youth development and plans high quality learning experiences for talented, low-income students beyond the traditional school year. A child typically starts at Horizons the summer before entering Kindergarten and returns year-after-year through 12th grade. Salisbury Horizons gives students the tools and support that will assist them in becoming successful, confident students who will be college and career ready.

The program currently serves more than 100 Wicomico County public school students at its current summer site, The Salisbury School.

Salisbury Horizons is a transformational, community-centered education program working to close the achievement gap for low-income children, kindergarten through 12th grade, attending Wicomico County Public Schools. In Wicomico County, 1 out 4 children live in poverty. Horizons students gain two-three months of reading and math skills each summer, and 96 percent of Horizons students go on to college or other post-secondary training. Referred primarily by Wicomico County Public School teachers, Horizons at The Salisbury School student members are immersed in a 6-week summer program and year-round, academic and enrichment curriculum that gives students unparalleled access to mentors, leaders, and innovative educational experiences. Days at Horizons include academics with an emphasis on literacy, STEM, and art in small classes led by professional teachers. Swimming and other confidence-boosting activities breakdown barriers to success and expose children to new opportunities.
