A New Challenge Comes to Turkey Trek

Salisbury, MD – Wicomico Recreation & Parks hosts its 15th annual Turkey Trek 5K on Thanksgiving Day at Pemberton Park. This year brings a new twist for participants: the Mr. Gobble Gobble Challenge.

One designated runner, dressed like a turkey, will try to outrun all of the other participants. Those who outrun the turkey will receive a sticker of honor, while others who have been passed will receive a sticker of shame.

“We wanted to bring a new sense of fun and competition to the race this year,” says Andrew Bugas, Youth Sports Program Director. “We are always looking for ways to keep our community engaged.”

There will also be awards for the overall male and female winners and for first through third place, as well as male and female winners in several age groups. Participants can dress up and try to earn the award for Best Thanksgiving Costume. Refreshments and holiday pie will be available after the race.

Registration is $35 for early registration and $40 after Nov. 10. Preregistration is available through 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17.

Preregistered runners will be able to pick up their race bib and shirt at the Wicomico Civic Center box office Nov. 21- 22 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

All proceeds from the race benefit Pemberton Nature Camp and other environmental programs. Pemberton Historical Park is located at 5561 Plantation Lane in Salisbury.

Participants are encouraged to dress up to for the chance to win the Best Thanksgiving Costume. This year’s race is set for Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23, at Pemberton Park.
