Program Purpose The purpose of the Home Instead Senior Care® community service program, Be a Santa to a Senior®, is to positively impact the community by providing holiday cheer and gift giving to seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the holiday season, are lonely and financially challenged.
* The local Home Instead Senior Care office is developing a Be a Santa to a Senior partnership committee consisting of community leaders and non-profit organizations.
* The committee will obtain the names of needy or lonely seniors as well as gift ideas for each senior.
* Local merchants will place a Christmas tree inside their stores from November 3rd through December 5th.
* Volunteers will write the first name or code name of the participating senior, and their gift preferences, on a Be a Santa to a Senior tree ornament. Each ornament will be placed on the Christmas tree.
* Merchant customers will pull an ornament from the tree and purchase a gift for the specific senior listed on the ornament. The gifts and corresponding ornament will be grouped together and left in the store.
* Gift ideas include functional clothing like slippers, socks or gloves. Other gift ideas include hand lotion, toiletry items, a nice pen and stationery including stamps or a pre-paid phone card.
* Program volunteers will regularly collect gifts and refresh tree ornaments as needed. The final gifts will be collected on December 8 th.
* Committee members and volunteers will distribute the gifts December 10th – 12th
* Christmas tree store locations: Apple Drugs Stores in Berlin, Fruitland, Snow Hill, Salisbury and Ocean Pines Community Center and Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce
Co-sponsors include MAC Area Agency on Aging, Commission on Aging, Department of Social Services, Health Department, Shore-up’s Shady Pines Adult Day Care, Ocean Pines Community Center, Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and Apple Drugs.
Two kick-off celebrations have been scheduled for the Be a Santa to a Senior program and we would very much appreciate your attendance to support the program. In addition to the program sponsors, invitations to the kick-off celebration have been extended to community leaders, local government officials, community residents, and the media.
