The Beach to Bay Heritage Area (BBHA) will be hosting their Annual Luncheon this year at the campus of UMES, Princess Anne, in the Henson Center on Thursday, October 28. “We are thrilled to be able to host this year’s guest speaker, Kate Larson” said BBHA President Kristen Goller. Kate Clifford Larson is an American historian and Harriet Tubman scholar. Her 2003 biography of Harriet Tubman, Bound for the Promised Land, was one of the first non-juvenile Tubman biographies published in six decades. Larson is the consultant for the Harriet Tubman Special Resource Study of the National Park Service and serves on the advisory board of the Historic Context on the Underground Railroad in Delaware, Underground Railroad Coalition of Delaware. In addition to this book, Dr. Larson is also a New York Times bestselling author of Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter (2015); and The Assassin’s Accomplice: Mary Surratt and the Plot to Kill Abraham Lincoln (2008).
She has consulted on film scripts (most recently the Harriet movie starring Cynthia Erivo), documentaries, museum exhibits, animation and augmented reality productions, numerous publications, and public history initiatives, including Maryland’s Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State and National Historical Park, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway and All-American Road on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, New York.
Dr. Larson is frequently interviewed by local, national and international radio programs and media outlets and has appeared on national and international television broadcasts including BBC, PBS, and C-Span, cable networks, and CBS Sunday Morning. She is currently writing a biography of civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer entitled Walk With Me, due out from Oxford University Press in 2021.
