A recent Becker Morgan Group project, the Rock Creek School, in Frederick County, Maryland earned LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is the recognized standard for measuring a building’s sustainability.
In partnership with Proffitt & Associates and Purposeful Architecture, Becker Morgan Group designed a state-of-the-art school for individuals ages 7-21 with complex medical conditions and severe intellectual, physical, emotional, hearing, vision, and learning disabilities while keeping sustainability a priority.
Developing a sustainable site was a key target area for sustainable practices, the design team provided open space on the property and incorporated native vegetation. Further, creative stormwater management solutions and the reduction of heat island effect both contributed to the certification.
Principal, Brad Hastings, AIA, comments on the certification “We are proud to work with clients and team members that value sustainability and brought this project to fruition. By creating a school that not only creates a positive environment for the students but also responsibly stewards our resources benefits the entire community. It is especially gratifying to give students with special needs sustainable spaces that contribute to their health and well-being along with their education.”
