Salisbury, MD – [April 30, 2025] – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore (BBBSES) is urgently calling on men across the region to step up and become mentors for local boys in need of a positive male influence. With a growing number of boys seeking guidance, friendship, and positive influence from a man, the organization is experiencing a critical shortage of male volunteers.
Currently, over 80% of the youth waiting to be matched in the program are boys, many of whom have been on the waitlist for months. These children—referred to as “Littles”—are eager for someone to talk to, learn from, and look up to.
“Male mentors play a critical role in building stronger, more connected communities,” said Jessica Mimms, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore. “When men invest their time in guiding and supporting a young person, they not only change that child’s life—they set an example for leadership, integrity, and compassion. Their presence sends a powerful message: every child deserves someone who believes in their potential.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adult mentors (“Bigs”) with children (“Littles”) to build strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships. Mentors are not required to have any special training- just a willingness to spend time, share life experiences, and be a positive influence.
“In a community where the majority of children awaiting mentors are boys, your presence as a male mentor isn’t just needed—it’s transformative. By stepping up, you become the role model, guide, and friend that a young boy may be missing, helping him navigate life’s challenges and realize his full potential,” says current Salisbury Big Brother, Jalon Doane.
BBBSES offers training, ongoing support, and flexible scheduling to ensure that volunteer mentors are prepared and supported. The program asks for a minimum commitment of one year, with meetings as simple as sharing a meal, playing a sport, or helping with homework.
If you’re a man over the age of 18 who wants to make a real, lasting impact, now is the time to act.
