The approved calendar for the 2023-2024 school year is available on the Calendar page of the school system’s website. The calendar (attached here) is posted in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.
The school year will open on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for most students. The last day of the school year will be June 12, 2024.
At its January meeting, the Board heard the results of the calendar input survey on which more than 2,250 responses were received. When asked for their preference for a pre-Labor Day or post-Labor Day start to the school year, more than 84% of survey respondents said they preferred to have school start after Labor Day. The Board agreed that Wicomico’s school year would start after Labor Day for 2023-2024, and asked staff to review other suggestions from the survey to determine if any adjustments should be made to the post-Labor Day draft calendar before final approval.
The adjusted calendar that the Board of Education approved at its Feb. 14 meeting shows responsiveness to survey feedback regarding dates within the survey, particularly for the winter and spring breaks. Many people suggested altering the winter break to allow for more time off after the winter holidays. They also suggested having fewer days off for winter break and more days off for spring break. On the final approved calendar:
- Winter break begins on Thursday, Dec. 21, after an early dismissal day on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Schools are closed through Tuesday, Jan. 2.
- Spring break begins on Thursday, March 28, after an early dismissal day on Wednesday, March 27. Schools are closed through Tuesday, April 2.
- Last day of school for students is now on Wednesday, June 12, with the last day for teachers on Friday, June 14.
