Salisbury- The City of Salisbury’s Housing and Community Development Department (HCDD) and the local Salisbury-Wicomico Complete Count Committee have partnered with Salisbury Housing to hold a Census BBQ event today in order to help count students living in off-campus housing in Salisbury.

Thanks to the generosity of Salisbury Housing, this event will take place on their property on the corner of South Division and Onley Rd. in Salisbury from Noon to 3:00 pm. This central location, near many of the off-campus housing complexes, will allow the Complete Count Committee to get as many students counted as possible. There will also be food and drinks provided by Salisbury Housing and the City of Salisbury’s HCDD, all are welcome to attend.

While universities do report students living on-campus, students living off-campus are required to respond to the Census themselves with information about their household. If a student lives at home with parents, they will be counted in their parent’s household Census count.

This event comes after the U.S. Census Bureau’s announcement earlier this week that Census counting will come to an abrupt halt today, October 15th. They most recently announced that people can fill out the online census form until tomorrow, October 16th, at 6:00 AM and the phone lines to answer the census via a phone call, will be open until tonight, October 15th, at 10:00 pm.

“Salisbury Housing, Salisbury’s long standing off campus student housing provider, is proud to partner with our local Census Complete Count Committee and the City of Salisbury to make sure that students living in our off-campus properties are counted in the U.S. Census,” shared Therman Brown, Property Manager of Salisbury Housing. “In light of the recent announcement that all census counting would end on October 15th, the student BBQ we planned for our residents today presented itself as the perfect time to make sure that our off-campus residents are included in Wicomico County’s census numbers,” he added.

Filling out the Census is a quick and easy process, most of the time taking under ten minutes to complete. Citizens can complete the Census by visiting www.my2020census.gov, or by calling 844-330-2020. For Spanish, residents can dial 844-468-2020, and for Haitian Creole, residents can dial 844-477-2020 anytime until 10 pm tonight.

Administrator Glanz has been helping to lead 2020 Census efforts since the formation of Salisbury-Wicomico County’s Complete Count Committee last fall. “While it is discouraging to see Census counting come to such an abrupt halt, we are so grateful for this partnership with Salisbury Housing and the Salisbury-Wicomico Complete Count Committee to ensure that students living off campus get counted.” she shared.
