Mayor James Ireton, Jr. sends condolences to the family of Elizabeth Bellavance, long-time fixture in the Salisbury and Salisbury University communities.
Elizabeth Bellavance, a powerful voice for social justice and equality in local and state community, died July 24 in Richmond, VA, of cancer. Mrs. Bellavance came to Salisbury in 1980 with her husband, Thom, who became the sixth President of Salisbury University. Ever since Mrs. Bellavance arrived, she became active in the local community, through the Maryland Catholic Conference, Costal Hospice, Inc., Salisbury University’s Institute of Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs, and much more. She will truly be missed by the numerous individuals whose lives she impacted.
“Mrs. Bellavance was an inspiration to me. The incredible work she did on behalf of an increasingly diverse community was, and still is, desperately needed. Her work, based on beliefs in scripture, was recognized throughout the State of Maryland. The University, its students and our City and its residents wish her eternal rest. I know the world has suffered from the loss of Liz Bellavance – our collective goal should be to live a life like hers,” said Mayor James Ireton, Jr.
