Free meter parking in effect during transition to new parking pay stations

Mayor Jake Day is excited to announce that the City will enact a “Parking Holiday” in Downtown Salisbury during the month of November. Between Wednesday, November 8th, and Sunday, November 26th, parking at all metered spots in Downtown Salisbury will be completely free of cost.

The Parking Holiday is timed to coincide with the City’s transition from traditional, mechanical parking meters, to the new pay stations which have been popping up throughout Downtown. In the first phase of the transition, 106 meters will be removed from the West end of Downtown, including parking lots 4, 11, 12 and 15, and the on-street parking on Church and Market St. The 6 pay stations which will replace the meters will still accept quarters, but will also accept credit and debit cards, as well as providing pay-by-phone convenience through the “Whoosh” app, which is available for free in the iTunes store and Google App Store.
“The Parking Holiday is a way of thanking citizens for bringing their business Downtown during the holiday shopping season – but it’s also a way for us to offer a bit of a down-period for folks to become acquainted with the new system,” said Mayor Day. “During the transition, our parking staff will be distributing information about the new parking pay stations, and Downtown businesses will be supplied with an informational rack card to distribute to their customers.

“The pay stations are easy to use, and they are super convenient. Whether you’re in the middle of a first-class meal, sitting in the barber’s chair, or engrossed in a page-turner at the Library, you will be able to extend your parking time from any location, through the app. So we’re bringing parking into the 21st Century, we’re eliminating visual clutter, and we’re improving customer service. We’re also saying, ‘This one’s on us!’ with free parking Downtown for all your Christmas shopping, all the way through Small Business Saturday, on November 25th!”
