October 06 Let’s get talking – Elevator Speeches and Speed Networking- 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

An elevator speech is as essential as a business card. You need to be able to say who you are, what you do, what you are interested in doing and how you can be a resource to your listeners.  There is no better way to put your elevator pitch to the test than to throw yourself into a speed-networking event.  During this session, you will craft your own special message and put it to the test during a fast paced speed networking experience.

October 20 Grant Writing: Proposal Writing Basics- 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Grant writing is a skill that has to be developed. There is no magic bullet, but there are tips and tools that can help you to find the right potential sources and effectively approach them. This program will be a great opportunity to hear from a grant writer and grant maker willing to share what they know about what works and what doesn’t and how you can increase your chances of success.

November 06 Community Foundation Annual Meeting- 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Fountains Conference Center 

The annual meeting is an opportunity for the Foundation to celebrate the community’s success in supporting philanthropy on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore.  The Foundation also reports on its activities during the past year in providing grants for local nonprofit organizations, scholarship awards, a variety of nonprofit support programs, and other initiatives that improve the quality of life for the citizens of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties.  $$

November 19 Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online- 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 

CFES is a Cooperating Collection of the Foundation Center and provides FREE access to the Foundation Directory Online.  This tremendous resource is a searchable database of over 120,000 foundations throughout the U.S. – many of which cannot be found through regular web searches.  Learn the basics of how to use this tool to identify new funding prospects for your program or organization.

December 03  Maryland’s Legislative and Budgeting Process HOT TOPIC- 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  presented by Henry Bogdan,  Advocacy & Public Policy Director- Maryland Nonprofits 

This class is for nonprofit leaders that are looking to get involved in lobbying and advocacy at the state level.  Legislative policymaking and state budgets have a huge impact on our ability to achieve our missions. Learn more about the state budget timetable, budget development and approval, state revenues and deficits- and more. $$

January 05 Community Needs Grant Program Interest Meeting- 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Whether your nonprofit is big or small, this workshop will help shed light on finding the resources you need to carry out your mission. Join us as we discuss the Community Foundation’s Community Needs Grants Program, ahead of the February 1, 2016 deadline. The grant application and award process will be reviewed in its entirety.

Fundraising Campaigns: Developing, Marketing, and Engaging Donors

Join colleagues at the Community Foundation’s Eastern Shore Nonprofit Support Center to gain valuable tools and tips to help increase your effectiveness and identify new resources to help meet your organization’s mission.   $$.  There are limited partial scholarships available.

February 18   Basic Non-Profit Financial Management- 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. presented by Tom Wilson, Lower Shore Support Services and Sharon Dickson, CFES Finance Director

Sound financial management is critical to the success of non-profit organizations, yet many board members and staff shy away because they think it is difficult or complicated.  This session will cover the basics of budgeting, accounting, reporting, and internal controls from a layman’s perspective.  Tom spent over 20 years working directly with dozens of small and medium sized non-profits to improve their financial management skills and practices.  Currently retired, is Executive Director of Lower Shore Support Services.  Lunch and Q&A session included.
