Creating STEM Internships

Over the last seven years, STEM Initiatives in Wicomico County Schools  has supported programs such as FIRST LEGO League, STEM Saturdays, Engineering is Elementary,  ACE Mentor and FIRST Robotics Teams for students from elementary through high School. The Wicomico County Public School System is now looking to extend STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) experiences for high school students by exploring the “inside” of STEM careers and employment on the Eastern Shore. WCBOE is looking to create STEM internships with the collaboration of local businesses, nonprofits and local government.

Summer STEM Internships would be in the areas of Engineering, Health & Bio Sciences, Construction Management, Information Technology and Environmental Sciences. Qualified students would be rising seniors with a 3.0 GPA or higher and individuals who have demonstrated an interest in STEM through coursework and/or extracurricular activities.

Each student would be responsible for his/her own transportation, would work approximately 20 hours per week, and would attend class once a week, for which they would earn 1 elective credit. The experience will begin June 30 and end July 31.

If you are a local business, nonprofit organization, governmental department, or division of a larger corporation interested in more details about hosting a STEM Intern this summer, please contact Dave Harner (dharner@wcboe.org) or Gretchen Boggs (gboggs@wcboe.org) at 410-677-4383
