Recently, the Donnie Williams Foundation presented a $25,000 grant to the local non-profit, 1 Year to Empowerment. The grant will provide the opportunity to welcome part-time staff to support the continued expansion and success of 1 Year to Empowerment. The staff will help current and future Lower Eastern Shore teenage girls to make healthy choices, gain self-respect, build lifelong friendships, and achieve their current and future ambitions.
Mark Granger, President of the Donnie Williams Foundation recently spoke to the “empowerees” and shared the significance of the contribution, “Donnie Williams started his Foundation to support enriching after school programs that promote learning, recreation, and health for school age children. Donnie grew up in an era where there were no after-school programs that he could benefit from. He believed that all children should have access to enriching after school activities. Our Foundation motto is Dream Big. 1 Year to Empowerment helps young girls do just that. We are proud to support the girls in the program.”
Since 2015, 1 Year to Empowerment has impacted the lives of approximately 42 teenage girls from the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. In January 2018, 1 Year to Empowerment welcomed 20 new girls from Dorchester, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. This year, the lives of these “Empowerees” will be enriched through various personal development activities. 1 Year to Empowerment Director, Dr. Samantha Scott shared, “This year our girls will explore and grow from a vast set of empowerment opportunities. Some of these activities include, a yoga and meditation class, a self-defense workshop, a wheelchair ramp build through Chesapeake Housing Mission, and a college and career exploration day. We are grateful for the Donnie Williams Foundation contribution to our organization and their commitment to help transform the lives of our local teenage girls in need.”
