The Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce – Education Committee Network (SACC EN) and the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore (CFES) are proud to announce Season 3, Episode 4 of Education is Everybody’s Business – Career Apprenticeship Success Stories, How Do They Really Work?

In this informative episode of EIEB, Host Ladd Colston, Ph.D., CEO of Sustainable Visions, LLC, discusses Registered Career Apprenticeships.

Apprenticeship USA states that a registered apprenticeship program (RAP) is an industry driven, high quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce. Individuals can obtain paid work experience with a mentor and receive progressive wage increases, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential. Registered apprenticeships are also industry vetted and are approved and validated by the U.S. Department of Labor or a state apprenticeship agency.

Governor Wes Moore has fully endorsed the implementation of registered apprenticeship programs by inviting employers from every industry, in every corner of the state, to take the governor’s apprenticeship pledge and help create a competitive Maryland economy, by building new talent for its businesses.

The recently passed Senate Bill 431 incentivizes companies to establish apprenticeship programs. The Maryland Department of Labor formed the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program which encompasses 13 local workforce development areas across the state.

Each workforce development area is supported by a local workforce development board which uses guidance and leadership from local private industry to identify skill shortages and cultivate relationships between workers and employers.

In this episode, Dr. Colston introduces us to Christopher MacLarion, State Director of the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program and Alicia Dennis, MATP Apprenticeship Navigator for the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Dennis collaborates with the Maryland Department of Labor to co-design programs tailored to the unique needs of Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset counties.

Lastly, Colston chats with a local business that can attest to the effectiveness of apprenticeship programs as a business investment. We will meet Georgeta Wainwright, Delaware Elevator’s Education and Compliance Manager, and John Vilkas, a graduate apprentice and certified mechanic.
