Wor-Wic Community College recently conferred certificates to six newly qualified community interpreters, the first at the college to complete the new “The Community Interpreter International (TCII)” course.
The six students’ tuition was covered by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.
The 40-hour qualified interpreter course prepares bilingual individuals to work in health care, education and social services. It is ideal for those who want to explore a new career pathway, excel in their current career, obtain a valuable credential or give back to their community. Topics include cultural mediation, techniques to perform culturally responsive mediation, business and legal practices and obligations as a community and medical interpreter, the nine core ethical principles for community interpreters and more. Students must pass a comprehensive final exam to earn the qualified interpreter certificate.
A second session of the course will begin July 28 and run through Aug. 13. It meets every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Register for the community interpreter class in the non-credit section of the Wor-Wic website, under “Business & Leadership.” A medical interpreter course is also offered, starting July 22.
Scholarships may be available to cover tuition. Email dmongor@worwic.edu for information.
