A Message from Congressman Hoyer, As we begin the tax filing season for 2024-25, I wanted to share with you some exciting news that will lower costs and make filing taxes easier for thousands of Marylanders.
Starting today, nearly 32 million Americans will be eligible to use the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Direct File program to file their taxes easily, securely, and for free. I’m excited to announce that thanks to the dedicated efforts by our local leaders, over 700,000 Marylanders will be able to file their taxes online for free this tax season with Direct File.
The average American taxpayer spends an average of $160 and eight hours when filing their annual tax return, often missing out on the credits and deductibles they are entitled to. Direct File allows Americans to file their state and federal returns electronically for free, which saves time and stress when filling out paperwork. As Majority Leader in the 117th Congress, I was proud to secure funding for the IRS and the Direct File program in the Inflation Reduction Act. I also led a bicameral letter with my Congressional colleagues urging the new administration to maintain and expand the program for 2025 and the years to come; I’m pleased that the administration agreed on the importance of making filing easier for taxpayers.
Visit the IRS’ website to learn more about your eligibility for Direct File, which can be accessed here. Taxpayers can also receive assistance through a virtual or in person appointment at one of the Comptroller of Maryland’s 11 branch offices. To schedule an appointment, visit the Comptroller’s website at https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/. I look forward to seeing eligible Marylanders participate in Direct File, as we continue the work to develop and expand this program for all taxpayers.
As always, I encourage all Fifth District residents to continue to share their concerns and insights with me by contacting my office or connecting with me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. If you are experiencing a personal difficulty such as issues accessing veterans’ benefits or another problem regarding a federal agency and you wish for my office to place an inquiry on your behalf, please complete the casework request form by clicking here.
