Fruitland Primary Music Teacher Kellie Harvey is a Nominee for Teacher Member of the Maryland State Board of Education; Voting by Maryland Teachers Open through Nov. 17 

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), in partnership with the State Board of Education, is holding an election to fill the teacher member seat on the state board. Kellie Harvey, M.M.Ed, NBCT, who has been musically inspiring students in Wicomico County Public Schools since 2014, is the only Wicomico teacher on the slate of 20 nominees. 

A dedicated music and dance educator for Prekindergarten through 2nd Grade at Fruitland Primary, she is a Grammy Music Educator Award Legacy Applicant (2026) and Quarterfinalist (2025) a Wicomico Teacher of the Year Finalist (2025) and Semifinalist (2020), Maryland Music Educators Association Outstanding Music Educator (2022) and a Salisbury University Outstanding Mentor Teacher (2021). “As a music and dance teacher in Wicomico County. I have witnessed firsthand how equitable, high-quality education can transform lives. My work as a classroom teacher, mentor, and statewide advocate has strengthened my belief that every student deserves not only an academically rigorous education, but also opportunities to grow creatively, socially, and emotionally,” Ms. Harvey said. 

Ms. Harvey advocates passionately for the role of the arts in education. She has developed and implemented an arts integration curriculum and facilitated the redesign of the Wicomico County General Music Curriculum for Prekindergarten through 5th Grade. Through numerous grants, she has expanded her classroom instrument collection and created innovative opportunities, including artist-in-residence programs and field trips, that enrich student learning. 

“This candidacy represents an opportunity to bring the authentic voice of Maryland’s teachers and students to state-level decision making. I am committed to advancing equity, teacher support, and holistic education that empowers all learners to thrive,” she said.

Voting opened Nov. 3 and will continue through Nov. 17. Eligible voters (active Maryland educator certificate or license with at least one teaching area on Oct. 10, 2025) will receive voting instructions via the email address that is saved in The Educator Application and Credentialing Hub (TEACH). Each eligible voter will be allowed to cast one vote during the election period (Nov. 3-17).MSDE will communicate with Maryland teachers via the email on file in the teacher’s The Educator Application and Credentialing Hub (TEACH) account. The individual with the most votes will win the election, and an announcement is scheduled to be made on Jan. 14. The winner’s name will be forwarded to the Governor for appointment to the Maryland State Board of Education for a term beginning on July 1, 2026.
