Gillis Gilkerson, one of the most stable and trusted general contracting and construction management firms on Delmarva, announced it has been hired to build a new 20,663 square foot fire station at 5175 Chicken City Road in Chincoteague Island, Virginia for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.

“We knew the Chincoteague Fire Company had outgrown their current spaces and wanted to consolidate in order to operate more efficiently from one location, Dwight Miller, president, Gillis Gilkerson.  “Our team in partnership with AWB Engineers has the experience and insight to deliver a fully functional fire house to support the fire company’s mission to serve its community.  We look forward to building our relationship with the company and work diligently to ensure their needs are met from start to finish.”

“We chose Gillis Gilkerson because of their experience and they came highly recommended by our designer, Danny Tolbert,” said Roe Terry, Public Information Officer, Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.  “The Gillis team talked to us in layman’s terms and never lost sight that we are firefighters and ambulance drivers, not land developers and building contractors.  They gave us their undivided attention and helped us understand the process and knew exactly what we needed to get the new fire station built.”

The metal skeleton of the new building will encase a masonry and siding structure.  The new station will house the fire company’s apparatus and equipment and include a new commercial kitchen, dining area, community space, bunk rooms, administrative offices, Fire and EMS storage space and training and conference rooms.  Gillis Gilkerson Project manager, Matt Esham reported the design of the building is currently underway by AWB Engineers with construction scheduled to begin in spring, 2016.

Esham and architect Layne Bynum from AWB both have extensive firehouse design and construction experience.  Fire houses they have worked on together include Pocomoke City, Parsonsburg, Willards and Ocean City, station 5, located in West Ocean City.
