Gary Chandler of GNI Properties, shakes the hand Molly Hilligoss, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County, following the donation of a house in the Church Street neighborhood. The property on 427 Elizabeth Street was previously a rental property but after a terrible fire, Chandler felt that Habitat could build a new house in its place and provide a family with affordable homeownership. In addition, Chandler presented Hilligoss with a check for $5,000 to be used towards the demolition of the house to make it more affordable to rebuild. “We are grateful to the Chandler Family and GNI Properties for their loyal and generous support of our mission,” explains Hilligoss. “Our revitalization efforts have had a positive effect on the quality of life in Church Street area and for all of us in Wicomico County.  Habitat succeeds because of the tremendous support of families like the Chandlers,” Hilligoss concluded.Gary Chandler donates house and $5000 - 2015

As a Christian housing ministry, Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people of all faiths to make ownership of decent, affordable homes a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County was founded in 1987; since then, the affiliate has built 61 homes locally.  Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments come back to the affiliate to help build more homes for more families.

Habitat’s offices are located at 908 W. Isabella St., just off Route 50, in Salisbury. Next-door is the Habitat ReStore, which sells new and gently used building and home improvement materials, appliances, doors, windows, lighting fixtures, flooring and more.   All items sold at the ReStore are donated and all proceeds benefit Habitat’s mission of providing decent affordable housing for sale to low income families in Wicomico County through no interest loans.
