On Tuesday, February 24, at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, William Chambers, President/CEO of the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce (SACC) and past Board Chair of the Maryland Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, moderated an engaging fireside chat with Governor Wes Moore for chamber executives from across the state.

Prior to the discussion, Chambers met privately with Governor Moore to address critical issues impacting Maryland’s Eastern Shore, ensuring the region’s business community and residents were well represented in the broader statewide conversation.

The wide-ranging dialogue explored key issues shaping Maryland’s future, including economic development, the Governor’s housing initiatives, energy sourcing and affordability, and the proposed FY2027 state budget.

Major topics discussed included:

Energy Demand & Affordability – Expanding reliable and diversified energy sources, including natural energy, to meet increasing demand while keeping costs manageable for businesses and homeowners.

Affordable Housing & Workforce Growth – Advancing housing solutions that strengthen workforce availability and enhance Maryland’s competitiveness in attracting and retaining employers.

Public Education & Career Readiness – Improving K–12 education outcomes to better prepare students for college and workforce opportunities.

Child Poverty & Community Investment Initiatives – Highlighting initiatives led by Jake Day and the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), with additional discussion planned for an upcoming episode of Education Is Everybody’s Business (EIEB).

Business Attraction & Innovation – Positioning Maryland as a destination for businesses of all sizes, including continued support for the state’s Quantum Technology Hub and other emerging industries.

Responsible Budget Stewardship – Working to balance Maryland’s budget without increasing taxes on homeowners, while maintaining a strong rainy-day fund to protect against economic uncertainty.

Governor Moore appeared candid and thoughtful in responding to Chambers’ direct legislative questions and their potential impact on Eastern Shore businesses and residents. Drawing on his experience as a veteran and business leader, the Governor emphasized his commitment to policies that support long-term economic growth while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

The discussion reflected a shared commitment between Maryland’s business leaders and state leadership to foster economic opportunity, strengthen communities, and ensure sustainable growth across every region of the state.
