The Life After Breast Cancer Program at MAC Inc., Area Agency on Aging, has again received support from Susan G. Komen Maryland, in the form of a check for $17,291.
This is the eighth year that Komen Maryland has supported the program at MAC, according to Lori Yates, Eastern Shore manager for Susan G. Komen Maryland.
The Life After Breast Cancer Program serves the women of the Lower Shore, helping them to reach full recovery from their breast cancer treatment. The program also provides education and activities which promote healthy living during their survivorship, and effectively serves a priority area for Komen Maryland, where incidence and mortality rates are high within the state of Maryland, Yates said.
One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and 5,250 women in Maryland will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, Yates said. Maryland has the sixth highest breast cancer death rate in the country.
Komen recently announced a new goal to reduce current breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50% in the next decade, primarily by focusing on metastatic breast cancer research and health equity. Komen is encouraging supporters to help them meet that goal by going beyond awareness and taking an active role in the fight against breast cancer. The call to action for this movement is #MoreThanPink.
