SALISBURY, MD – Local businesses have been rolling up their sleeves to take part in Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County’s Women Build event. Teams of women from the local area have been volunteering their time and skill at 313 Barclay Street, a home being built alongside single working mother of three and nursing student, Rhoda Nakey.
“We look forward to the Women’s Build every year, and are grateful for the opportunity to participate in hands-on initiatives,” said Tara Blaine, Senior Branch Manager of M&T Bank–a $5,000 ‘Framing Sponsor’ of this year’s Women Build. “Not only does this event educate and empower women but through our partnership with Wicomico County Habitat, M&T’s contribution provides tangible support for families like Rhoda and her daughters.”
Molly Hilligoss, Executive Director of Wicomico Habitat, said in a statement, “With rising construction costs it has been a blessing to have the financial and physical support of locally engaged, philanthropic businesses such as M&T Bank. It is always wonderful to see a team of dedicated employees come together to help build a home.”
As the Nakey home build continues, multiple businesses and individuals to-date have sponsored building material costs for this home. The Bank of Delmarva contributed $1,000 as a ‘Doors Sponsor’ for the 2022 Women Build campaign and contributed teams to build days.
The house at Barclay Street is scheduled for completion by mid-November, so the Nakey family can enjoy their first Thanksgiving together in their new home.
About Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County
Habitat for Humanity works to make homeownership of decent, affordable homes a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County was founded in 1987; since then the affiliate has built and sold 72 homes locally. Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat homes are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments come back to the affiliate to help build more homes for more families.
