Local Military Veterans Supported By Rotary Clubs

The hundreds of large American flags on display along U.S. Route 50 at Wor-Wic Community College have helped four local military veterans’ assistance groups.   This was the eleventh year of the Wicomico County Flags for Heroes program that is organized through the joint efforts of the Rotary Club of Salisbury, Rotary Club of Wicomico County, and Salisbury Sunrise Rotary Club.

Donors sponsored flags for persons they consider heroes and thousands of dollars were raised.  The flags have been on display since prior to Memorial Day and will remain on display through Independence Day.  From money raised this year, each of the following organizations received $1,000.

  • Operation We Care provides care packages for armed forces members who are serving overseas.
  • Chesapeake Housing Mission will use the money only for military veterans or veterans’ families.
  • Heroes Haven, Inc. transports injured veterans, police officers, emergency medical service personnel, and fire fighters to Maryland’s Eastern Shore for a hunting experience and Eastern Shore hospitality.
  • The Disabled American Veterans Eastern Shore Chapter 34 will use the donation to transport veterans to their medical appointments, including to the Perry Point VA medical center in Cecil County,

The Rotary Club of Salisbury is in its 107th year of service to our community.  Interested in becoming one of the club’s People of Action?  Contact BJ Summers at 443-880-4296 or bjsummers072481@gmail.com.
