Maryland GOP Leader: Legislature ‘Failed Dramatically’ to Address State’s Energy Needs

Maryland Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey is disappointed by what he sees as a lack of progress made on energy issues during the 2025 legislative session. Hershey described energy policy as Senate Republicans’ top issue for the session because Maryland imports more than 40 percent of its energy from out of state, which he believes will deter economic growth if not addressed. He pointed out that Governor Moore joined eight other states in issuing a regional strategic action plan to “pursue interregional transmission solutions to reduce costs for consumers,” while net energy producers and neighboring states Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia did not.

Energy alternatives: Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready told The Baltimore Sun he thinks Democrats are becoming “more comfortable” with nuclear power as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, but meaningful change is still years away.
