SALISBURY, MD—Salisbury University’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture has been selected as a host site for “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” a traveling exhibition from Maryland Humanities Museum on Main Street program and the Smithsonian Institution.

The exhibit comes to SU August 14-September 25, 2021.

Based on a major exhibition on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the traveling display will share many of the same dynamic features: history and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photos and information; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia and protest material.

The Nabb Center is one of five locations in Maryland to host the exhibition, which will be located in the lobby of the Patricia A. Guerrieri Academic Commons.

The Nabb Center will partner with SU’s Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (PACE) and the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Area (LESHA) to develop accompanying programing to promote discussion and inspire students and visitors to think about the democratic process, activism and civic engagement. The companion exhibit will be displayed in the G. Ray Thompson Gallery, on the 4th floor of the Guerrieri Academic Commons, featuring stories and artifacts from the Nabb Center collections.

Among the Center’s archival holdings are records from local political and civic groups; papers from several local, state and national political figures; voter registration ledgers; and Wicomico County ballots dating to the 1890s.

The Center’s artifact collection contains over 2,500 items from national, state and local political campaigns spanning from 1820-1986 that includes posters, flyers, buttons and a wide range of more unusual ephemera.

Maryland Humanities is a statewide, educational nonprofit organization that creates and supports educational experiences in the humanities that inspire all Marylanders to embrace lifelong learning, exchange ideas openly and enrich their communities.
