Everyone with a GPS knows that it makes finding directions lot easier for drivers. Now a different kind of GPS is helping to guide surgeons in the right direction for the most precise knee replacements.
ExactechGPS Guided Personalized Surgery provides surgeons with real-time visual guidance and alignment data in total knee surgery. Similar to a navigation device in a car, this technology provides a visual map of the patient’s joint on a screen, allowing surgeons to easily make adjustments, use minimally invasive techniques and perform implant alignment relative to the patient’s needs.
Peninsula Regional Medical Center was the first in the area to use ExactechGPS for total knee replacement surgeries because of its benefit to patients, says said PRMC Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation team orthopedic surgeon and ExactechGPS user Dr. Pasquale Petrera.
“In studies of the ExactechGPS unit, it is shown to be accurate to within one millimeter or one degree of variability. This is much more accurate than can be done with conventional instruments and the human eye,” said PRMC Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation team orthopedic surgeon and ExactechGPS user Dr. Pasquale Petrera. “PRMC’s continued support of this new technology benefits the whole Delmarva Peninsula.”
The technology combines surgeon expertise with an advanced computer system to perform the patient’s knee surgery with a goal of advanced accuracy and precision. Personalized for a patient’s unique bone structure and anatomy, Exactech GPS allows surgeons to decide where to remove bone and place the knee implant in the optimal position.
PRMC is the only hospital in the state of Maryland currently using ExactechGPS. Since its introduction to the facility in 2014, Dr. Petrera has performed more than 250 total knee replacement surgeries using the technology.
