Peninsula Regional Medical Center recently cut the ribbon on its new Richard A. Henson Research Institute, located on the PRMC campus.
The Richard A. Henson Research Institute offers clinical trials for cancer and heart disease as well as multiple other disciplines. Peninsula Regional is able to provide patients with access to clinical trials and studies thanks to its partnerships with the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network, national cooperative groups and healthcare industry groups.
Studies are not limited to cancer, but include heart disease research and more. While PRMC has offered clinical trials for many years, the new institute provides a centralized hub for researchers and clinical staff to better coordinate the specialized care and intensive followup required by research, as well as a more comfortable, welcoming environment for patients receiving this care.
The new institute was made possible by a generous donation from the Richard A. Henson Foundation, which provided $1.25 million in funding to further medical research at Peninsula Regional. Henson Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Victor Laws said, “We are pleased to support the Richard A. Henson Research Institute because we see value in PRMC’s link with Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, its tremendous potential for PRMC and for our community at large.” Over the past 31 years, the Henson Foundation has donated $6.6 million to Peninsula Regional for important initiatives including the Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute and the founding of Peninsula Regional’s Pastoral Care Department.
