Wicomico Public Libraries has received a grant from PNC Bank in the amount of $5,000 for its Raising Readers program. Raising Readers is a program in which librarians visit licensed childcare homes and provide a story time and a free bag of books and materials. These bags contain 4 picture books, a Story Play resource book, Word Building Puzzles, a Jar of Finger Plays and a music CD. The funds for this year’s Raising Readers program allows for visits to 50 childcare providers in Wicomico County. The librarians model best practices in early literacy and encourage the providers to take advantage of the many resources available at the library.
Also included in the bag is information on PNC Grow Up Great®, a $350 million, bilingual program dedicated to helping prepare America’s youngest children for great things in school and life. Through PNC Grow Up Great®, PNC has been a consistent voice for the importance of quality early childhood education — awarding grants, championing the cause, supporting the creation of educational resources, and volunteering.
