Joint Announcement from Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano, Salisbury Mayor Randy Taylor, and the Maryland Department of Commerce
Potential Retail Investment Marks an Exciting Step Toward Revitalizing Centre of Salisbury and Expanding Economic Opportunities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore
Salisbury, MD — Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano and Salisbury Mayor Randy Taylor are pleased to announce that Rural King, one of America’s leading farm and home retailers, is tentatively planning to open a new location at the Centre of Salisbury, pending final agreements and necessary approvals.
The potential investment represents an exciting economic development opportunity for Salisbury and Wicomico County, bringing the possibility of new jobs, expanded retail options, and renewed economic activity to a property that has long been a focus of revitalization efforts.
The announcement follows economic development outreach at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) convention in Las Vegas in May 2026, where County Executive Giordano and local economic development representatives met directly with Rural King representatives to discuss opportunities for expansion into Wicomico County.
“This is exactly why we attend events like ICSC and actively pursue businesses that make sense for our community,” said County Executive Julie Giordano. “While plans are still tentative, we are extremely encouraged by the progress being made. Economic development doesn’t happen by sitting behind a desk waiting for businesses to come to us. It happens by building relationships, opening doors, and showing companies why Wicomico County is a great place to invest.”
Founded in 1960 in Mattoon, Illinois, Rural King is a billion-dollar, family-owned retailer known as “America’s Farm and Home Store.” With more than 150 locations, the company offers agricultural supplies, tools, hardware, lawn and garden products, livestock and pet supplies, outdoor equipment, clothing, and household essentials. Rural King has built its reputation on affordable prices and serving hardworking families, farmers, homeowners, and rural communities.
For Salisbury, a potential Rural King location could serve as a significant catalyst for additional commercial investment and revitalization of the former mall property.
“The possibility of bringing Rural King to Salisbury is exciting news for our city,” said Mayor Randy Taylor. “Revitalizing commercial properties, attracting quality businesses, and creating opportunities for our residents remain important priorities. This potential investment demonstrates what can happen when city and county leaders work together with the business community to promote economic growth. We are optimistic about the discussions and look forward to seeing this opportunity move forward.”
The Maryland Department of Commerce recognizes the importance of attracting established businesses to communities across the state, particularly projects that encourage reinvestment in existing commercial properties and support regional economic growth.
“Rural King’s interest in Salisbury reflects the tremendous opportunities available on Maryland’s Eastern Shore,” said Carl Anderton from Maryland Department of Commerce. “The Moore Miller Administration is encouraged by the ongoing discussions and remain committed to supporting partnerships that bring new investment, jobs, and economic opportunities to communities throughout Maryland.”
County Executive Giordano emphasized that the ongoing discussions are part of a broader economic development strategy focused on attracting new businesses, strengthening the local economy, and positioning Wicomico County for continued growth.
“For years, our residents have wanted to see something positive happen at the Centre of Salisbury,” Giordano added. “We heard those concerns, and collaboratively we have been actively working to attract businesses that will invest in our community. While there are still steps to be completed before anything is finalized, this is real progress and a direct result of our economic development efforts. Rural King would be a tremendous fit for Wicomico County, and we will continue working to help turn this opportunity into a reality.”
Both the County Executive and Mayor expressed optimism about the potential project and reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively to attract businesses, encourage private investment, and revitalize underutilized commercial properties throughout the community.
No final opening date has been established, and the proposed location remains subject to final agreements and approvals. Additional information will be shared as discussions progress.
