Salisbury Jaycees again named No. 1 chapter in Maryland

Giessenbier 2018

SALISBURY, MD—For the sixth year since 2010, the Salisbury Jaycees has won the Henry S. Giessenbier Memorial Award, designating it the top Jaycees chapter in Maryland.

The honor came during the Maryland Jaycees’ annual winter convention, hosted in Annapolis. The award was presented for the chapter’s accomplishments in 2018.

“This honor represents the hard work of all chapter members in the past year,” said 2018 Salisbury Jaycees President Kristy Johnson. “From continuing long-standing community projects such as the Salisbury Christmas Parade, Treat Street and the Children’s Christmas Shopping Tour, to initiating new ways to fill community needs, such as our new Adaptive Easter Egg Hunt and participation in the Fresh Start back-to-school program for Wicomico County students, we are proud of what we have accomplished and thrilled that others have recognized those accomplishments, as well.”

As this year’s Giessenbier Award winner, the Salisbury Jaycees will compete with other chapters from across the country to be named the national chapter of the year at the JCI USA National Convention this April in Indianapolis.

In addition to the Giessenbier Salisbury members and programs received individual recognition at the state convention. The chapter’s inaugural Adaptive Easter Egg Hunt, for children with disabilities, was named the Maryland Jaycees’ Project of the Year. Chapter member Shannon Vaughan managed the event.

Salisbury Jaycees member Emily Nock was named the state organization’s Key Person of the Year for her mentorship of Maryland Jaycees President Jess Kling, while member Vinnie Sirna received the inaugural Elaine Hoffman Memorial Award as the chapter’s “friendliest Jaycee.”

In addition, Kling presented year-end Presidential Awards to Johnson, Nock, Rhodes and Salisbury Jaycees Past Presidents Travis Fisher and David Smith for their contributions to the state and local chapters throughout the year.

The 72nd annual Salisbury Christmas Parade was named the Maryland Jaycees’ Project of the Third Trimester for 2018. Outgoing Salisbury Jaycees Treasurer Kayla Smith was honored as Local Chapter Officer of the Trimester. New Salisbury member Moses Cohen was named Maryland Jaycees Rookie of the Trimester for his service to the Annapolis Jaycees in 2018.

Two members of the Salisbury Jaycees’ board of directors, President Jamie Nichols and Individual Development Vice President Kyle Livingston, also advanced in the JCI USA Passport to Civic Leadership program, with their new degrees announced during the convention.

Founded in 1940, the Salisbury Jaycees provides community service, social and leadership training opportunities for men and women ages 18-40. Membership meetings are 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of each month at the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce Business Center, 144 E. Main St.
