Mayor James Ireton, Jr. is pleased to announce that the City has been awarded a $32,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Maryland Bikeways Program. The funding will be used to obtain professional consulting services to prepare a design and construction plans for adding signs and roadway striping for bike lanes on West Main Street, Fitzwater Street, and Parsons Road. The project will add 1.05 miles of bike lanes, and will be the first bike lane project for citizens on the west side of Salisbury. The proposed Fitzwater Street bike lane is required to improve safety for transportation and recreational bicyclists alike.
The City Council recently passed Ordinance No. 2341 which created the bike route along West Main Street, Fitzwater Street and Parsons Road. This grant will enable the City to proceed with the design necessary to construct the route.
This is the fourth consecutive year that the City was successful in receiving grant funding from the Maryland Bikeways Program. The first year’s grant funded the bike lanes from Salisbury University to Downtown Salisbury along Camden Avenue and Waverly Drive, which were completed in September 2013. The second grant is for improvements to the bike lanes on Riverside Drive and South Boulevard, which were completed in July 2015. The third grant is for consulting services to prepare a wayfinding plan for existing bike routes.
