Salisbury, MD – The City of Salisbury is proud to announce that it has been honored as a Silver-Level Sustainable Maryland municipality by the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. Salisbury was one of seventeen Maryland municipalities honored at the Sustainable Maryland Awards Ceremony at the Maryland Municipal League’s annual Fall Conference on Tuesday, October 11. The City was one of 10 municipalities certified at the new Silver level.

“We are pleased to be awarding a record number of certifications this year. These certifications show a commitment to sustainability by Maryland’s municipalities that is truly impressive in both depth and breadth,” said Mike Hunninghake, Director of the Sustainable Maryland program. “The commitments and associated actions are a critical investment for a future where local governments will increasingly be at the forefront in the fight against climate change. Sustainable Maryland stands ready to support and celebrate these communities, elected officials, and Green Teams.”

This achievement is based on a submitted list of qualifying initiatives and policies within the City of Salisbury, including our two Community Gardens, Green Business Certification program, energy efficiency, stormwater management, Tree City USA and Bee City USA certifications, and others. To achieve certification, municipalities are required to form a Green Team comprised of local residents, community leaders, municipal staff and officials and complete a variety sustainability-related actions worth a total of at least 150 points for Bronze level certification, or 400 points for Silver level certification, as well as documentation of these actions.

“The City of Salisbury is incredibly honored to accept this award for the third consecutive term,” said Mayor Jacob Day. “Sustainability is a core tenet of our policymaking, and its importance will only continue to grow as our City does. Not only is this an achievement for Salisbury, but also for our fantastic Green Team, who has led our efforts with steadfast dedication. Thank you to Sustainable Maryland for this honor.”

The Silver-Level award is for the 2022-2025 term, and follows two Bronze-Level awards for 2019-2021 and 2016-2019.
