Salisbury – Mayor Jake Day is pleased to announce that the City of Salisbury has received the Maryland Sustainable Growth Commission’s 2017 Award for Sustainable Communities in recognition of its Envision Salisbury plan for growth. The Mayor accepted the award at a ceremony on May 18th in Annapolis.
The winners of this year’s Sustainable Growth Awards represent individuals and organizations that demonstrate their commitment to sustainable growth – development or redevelopment that is compact, walkable and takes advantage of existing infrastructure while preserving the rural landscape – in Maryland.
Envision Salisbury is the City’s 20-year master plan document, which was created with the input and assistance of literally thousands of citizens and experts over a 2-year period. The process involved two college studio sessions – one graduate and one undergraduate – in the University of Maryland architecture program, focusing on urban design and building design services. The final document was voted upon and adopted by the City Council as Salisbury’s official master plan in April of 2016.
“I applaud the hard work, creativity, and resourcefulness that this year’s Maryland Sustainable Growth Award recipients bring to our great state,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Our administration is proud to celebrate their contributions and their commitment to helping change Maryland for the better.”
“This award, maybe more than any other Salisbury has received, belongs to everyone,” said Mayor Day. “This was an exhaustive process which involved so many people across so many disciplines and areas of expertise – it’s a well-informed, comprehensive plan to get us where we’re going, and I think this award shows that we got it right.”
