Salisbury, MD — The Salisbury Zoo is pleased to announce that Jamie Nichols has accepted the position of assistant director, completing the Zoo’s senior leadership team at a pivotal moment for the organization.
Nichols was selected following a competitive hiring process that included several highly qualified candidates. Throughout the selection process, she distinguished herself as the top candidate. Over the past three years, Nichols has consistently demonstrated exceptional commitment to the Salisbury Zoo through her professionalism, leadership, and selfless dedication.
“Jamie has proven herself to be a thoughtful leader who understands both the day-to-day operations of the Zoo and its long-term vision,” Chuck Eicholz, Zoo Director said. “We are confident she will be an outstanding addition to our senior leadership team as we move forward.”
In her new role, Nichols will oversee revenue generation initiatives and work to develop and strengthen partnerships within the greater Salisbury area and beyond. She will also provide leadership oversight for Guest Services, Education, Marketing, and Media Relations; key areas that support the Zoo’s mission of conservation, education, and community engagement.
The Salisbury Zoo exists to inspire respect and care for the natural world by providing exceptional animal care, meaningful educational experiences, and accessible opportunities for people to connect with wildlife. As a free, family-friendly community resource, the Zoo serves Salisbury, the Eastern Shore, and visitors from across the region, contributing to quality of life, environmental education, and local tourism.
With this appointment, the Zoo now has its full senior staff team in place, marking an important milestone for the organization. Unified leadership will allow for more intentional collaboration and strategic planning as the Zoo continues to strengthen community partnerships, enhance guest experiences, and advance its conservation and education efforts.
Looking ahead, the Salisbury Zoo plans to apply for accreditation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in fall 2026 or spring 2027. AZA accreditation represents the highest standards in animal care, conservation, education, and organizational excellence, and provides accredited institutions with opportunities for increased collaboration within the zoological community. Achieving this status would allow the Salisbury Zoo to strengthen professional partnerships, share resources and expertise, and further advance its mission. Leadership roles such as the director and assistant director are critical in guiding the Zoo toward meeting these standards.
Community members are encouraged to visit the Salisbury Zoo, attend upcoming events, and learn more about conservation efforts happening locally and globally.
